Community Festival

Est. 1972

ComFest 1973 – Datagang

June 13, 2020 by Ro-z Mendelson

These 2 videos are from reel-to-reel video tapes of the Community Festival held in 1973, made by members of Datagang.

Datagang was a video collective in Columbus during the early 70’s. Born out of the same culture of dissent as The Columbus Free Press, DataGang documented scenes from the Columbus underground, captured organizing meetings of the Food Co-op and North End Community Center as well as political protests, produced a movie about rape prevention and shot footage of some of the first Community Festivals. They also gave people the opportunity to experiment with video equipment and techniques. In 2008, with support from ComFest, over 50 of the group’s reel-to-reel video tapes were restored and digitized. These selections from the tapes provide glimpses into the history of the festival and the progressive community that gave rise to it.
